CCTV & Broadband Update

As reported in the Spring 2013 newsletter, the Parish Council has been looking into the possibility of installing CCTV as a crime prevention measure.

At the Parish Meeting on 16 May PC Dave Lyons spoke about the crime prevention merits of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system and CCTV in general. Cllr Alastair Spencer also gave an outline presentation on the proposal for CCTV.

The Parish Council would like to take the opportunity to update residents on the proposals as the Parish Meeting raised a number of issues.

At the time of going to press 47 residents have responded to the Parish Council article in regard to the proposal for CCTV. Of these responses 28 were in favour of CCTV, 15 were against CCTV and a further 4 liked the idea in principle but could not support the proposal because of concerns about the coverage area of CCTV and/or the costs of supplying and maintaining it.

The Parish Council feels that there is enough support at this stage to pursue investigations into the provision of a CCTV system. Further investigations will look into the difference between the various systems available and appropriate professional advice will be sought.

Once the Parish Council is satisfied that it has fully investigated the options; which type of system, costs, funding and location, it will arrange a public meeting. The purpose of this meeting will be to update residents on the options and establish the level of support for an appropriate system either on a permanent or trial basis.

The Parish Council would like to take this opportunity to thank all residents who have already made their views known and to reassure residents that all views will be taken into consideration.

As also mentioned at the Parish Meeting we are pleased to advise you that West Sussex County Council have, as expected, reached agreement with BT for the installation of a fibre optic high speed broadband network for the county. It is expected that the rollout will start soon and when connected residents should see a significant increase in download and upload speeds. As yet no date has been posted for the conversion of the Birdham exchange, we will let you know when we are advised.
